Our services

The hardest step is the first one you take.

The practical demands and pressures that accompany becoming a parent can put unexpected stress on families, creating cycles of doubt, isolation, anxiety and depression at a time when you feel you should be feeling happy and contented.

Getting help early is the key to bonding well with your baby and moving towards a more enjoyable and fulfilling parenting experience. St John of God Raphael Services

If you feel like it’s time to talk, the first step is to see your GP, who can develop a Mental Health Care Plan and provide you with a referral to St John of God Raphael Services.

We provide free or no out-of-pocket confidential counselling and support for mums, dads and families through the emotional challenges of pregnancy and early parenthood up to your child’s fourth birthday. We also offer counselling and support for parents who are going through prenatal testing and pregnancy loss.

With locations throughout NSW, Victoria and WA, there’s sure to be a service close to you.

What can I expect?

As part of our comprehensive initial assessment, we talk to clients about their current and past mental health, and what’s been going on for them during the pregnancy and since becoming a parent.

Your support plan may involve:

  • Individual counselling – a one-on-one meeting with a clinician for perinatal mental health counselling and therapy
  • Group therapy – an opportunity to connect with other parents who are experiencing similar feelings and challenges
  • Psychiatric support – treatment for mental health disorders, including prescriptions for medication if appropriate.

Our multidisciplinary teams deliver personalised, community-based care that enables parents to access and develop the support they need to thrive.

See our frequently asked questions to find out more about how appointments work or learn more about perinatal anxiety and depression.
