Community and social outreach

We are committed to reaching out to members of our community who are vulnerable or experiencing disadvantage.

We return all profits to the communities we serve by:

  • updating and expanding technology and facilities
  • expanding and improving services
  • providing social outreach services to support health and wellbeing.

Horizon House

Horizon House provides accommodation, stability and support for young people aged 16 to 22 who are at risk of homelessness. Bendigo is one of two locations where we offer specialist support through the Horizon House Young Mother and Baby Program.

Community initiatives

Our community initiatives work alongside our social outreach programs to support people in need.

These include:

  • fundraising for local groups and charities through raffles, gold coin donations and special events
  • building partnerships with Aboriginal organisations through our Reconciliation Action Plan
  • improving accessibility and inclusion through our disability access and inclusion plan
  • providing food and volunteers to community meal programs.

Consumer engagement

St John of God Bendigo Hospital engages and consults with our consumers as part of our governance of the hospital.

Our primary source of consumer engagement is the contribution we receive from our Patient Consumer Group.

The group meets quarterly and offers valuable, objective feedback on:

  • the quality of hospital information, publications and brochures (for example, whether they are easy to understand and meet the needs of patients and visitors)
  • patient safety and quality performance measures
  • service reviews through other hospital committees.

Each member of the group has been a patient at our hospital in the past or has visited family or friends in our care.

We also have community representation within our hospital's other committees.

Please contact us for more information on our consumer engagement opportunities.

History of St John of God Bendigo Hospital

St John of God Bendigo Hospital was established in 2005 after being acquired by St John of God Health Care from Mt Alvernia Mercy Hospital.

St John of God Health Care proudly continues the Catholic tradition and Mission of providing excellence in health care to Bendigo, which was started by the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood who founded the hospital in 1961.

St John of God Bendigo Hospital became part of St John of God Health Care in 2005, following its acquisition from Mt Alvernia Mercy Hospital.

Since then, we have continued to grow to meet the needs of our region. We completed a major hospital redevelopment in 2017, followed by upgrades to our birthing suites in 2019. In March 2025, we launched our new robotic program, and in June 2025, we introduced our palliative care collaborative service.

Today, we continue to invest in our services, facilities and people so we can care for communities across central and northern Victoria, and into southern New South Wales.
