Our approach to international health development
St John of God International Health works with governments and local health care providers to build sustainable programs and strengthen the capacity of health care workers in Timor Leste.
St John of God International Health is committed to:
- Building long-term relationships with local governments, health care providers and other local non-governmental organisations that are based on sustainability, trust, collaboration and mutual respect.
- Using local strategic plans to guide our planning.
- Using the United Nations’ definition of ‘capacity building’ to define our strengthening approach: “The process through which individuals, organisations and societies obtain, strengthen and maintain the capabilities to set and achieve their own development objectives over time.”
Our programs focus on strengthening confidence, capability and competence within local health workers so improvements can be sustained well beyond the life of any single program.
Development programs
Health manager program
Strengthens the capability of mid-level managers across three key areas including leadership, quality and human resources. The program uses an active, practical learning approach and requires participants to complete a quality improvement project.
Core competency program
Strengthens five essential clinical competencies including professional practice, infection control, patient assessment, medication safety and basic life support. Delivered across three progressive levels, with all nurses and midwives required to complete the first two levels.
Educator development program
Equips nurse and midwife educators with a strong foundation in adult learning principles, enabling them to share knowledge and skills in a sustainable way. The program supports educators to plan, develop, deliver, monitor and evaluate clinical training, and to assess when and if training is the solution or part of the solution.
Quality program
Supports hospital quality teams to develop and maintain policies and procedures that drive continuous improvement and compliance with agreed standards. The program strengthens audit processes, supporting the use of data for decision making.
