Research at St John of God Health Care
We undertake high quality, ethical research which has the greatest potential to improve clinical practice and focus on translational projects which have the greatest potential to improve patient health care.
Our research units cover a broad range of medical and surgical specialties including cancer, orthopaedics, colorectal surgery, mental health and intensive care medicine.
Research governance, as defined by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is a framework that ensures research is conducted ethically, safely, and responsibly, adhering to institutional, jurisdictional, and national standards. It encompasses all stages of a research project, from planning to completion, and addresses various aspects such as participant safety, data privacy, financial management, and legal compliance.
Health service organisations also have obligations under the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework to ensure that clinical trial service provision is embedded into routine health care and conducted in accordance with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. Accordingly, health service organisations are assessed concurrently for clinical and corporate services and clinical trial service provision under the Australian Health Service Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme.
At St John of God Health Care, we apply the same governance principles that are required for clinical trial services to our broader research activity to ensure the highest standards of research governance for the safety of our patients, caregivers and community. For further information, please visit the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework website.
