St John of God Warrnambool Hospital is a 74-bed private hospital, providing quality health care services to the people of Warrnambool and South West Victoria.
Our dedicated team of health professionals, consisting of more than 190 caregivers, as well as a commitment to continuous improvement ensures the hospital excels in meeting the community's health care needs.

We are consistently improving our facilities to ensure the best experience for our patients and visitors, some of these include:
Endoscopy Unit upgrade
We upgraded our Endoscopy Unit in January 2025, improving facilities for procedures involving the digestive tract.
Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) redevelopment
We completed major upgrades to the CSSD in February 2025, enhancing the cleaning, sterilisation and preparation of surgical instruments to support safe and efficient surgery.
Solar panel installation
We installed rooftop solar panels in January 2025 to help power the hospital and reduce environmental impact through cleaner energy use.
Microscope acquisition
A high-precision surgical microscope purchased in 2024 provides exceptional image clarity, for procedures, in particular microvascular plastic surgery, requiring microsurgical accuracy.
Community and social outreach
Our hospital has a long history of working together with people in our community to help those in need. Today we continue this work through the following community partnerships and social outreach initiatives.
Consumer engagement
We provide consumers with opportunities to share their feedback on how we’re doing and areas we could improve.
We have a Community and Consumer Committee that serves as an advisory committee to our hospital.
They play an important role in representing patient and visitor views. Each member of the group has been a patient at our hospital in the past or has visited family or friends in our care.
The group meets quarterly with our Director of Clinical Services and share valuable, objective feedback on:
- the quality of hospital information, publications and brochures (for example, whether they are easy to understand and meet the needs of patients and visitors)
- patient safety and quality performance measures
- service reviews through other hospital committees.

History of St John of God Warrnambool Hospital
Our hospital in regional South West Victoria is a great source of local pride and eliminates long journeys to other hospitals for treatment.
The establishment of a hospital in Warrnambool in 1939 by the Sisters of St John of God filled a great need in a strongly Catholic region, and instilled in its caregivers, the Sisters’ values of hospitality, respect, compassion, justice and excellence. It is now the only private hospital between Adelaide and Geelong.
From humble beginnings in a renovated old home, Glenrye, in Botanic Road, the first purpose-built hospital was swiftly erected and opened in 1940, despite the outbreak of World War Two and shortages of labour and finance. It served the community - with major extensions in 1962 - until it was completely replaced in 1994.
The hospital celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014 and has been served by nearly 100 Sisters of St John of God since it was established.
