Other facilities include 6 wards, a day procedure centre, outpatient rehabilitation gym, cafes and more.

Community and social outreach

We have a long history of working with and helping people within the community and each year direct a portion of revenue to programs within the community.

Tonga Twinning Program

Since 1992, we have supported an exchange program for nurses from our St John of God Ballarat Hospital and the Kingdom of Tonga’s Vaiola Hospital. During these exchanges, our nurses provide Tongan nurses with role-modelling, mentoring and education.

We also provide practical support and equipment to the Vaiola Hospital.

Consumer engagement

St John of God Ballarat Hospital engages and consults with our consumers as part of our governance of the hospital.

Our Partnering with Consumers Committee consists of people who have been a patient of the hospital, or a carer or visitor of a patient of the hospital. The committee provides valuable insight into our organisation through the eyes of people who use our services.

The committee has many roles including:

  • reviewing patient information documents
  • reviewing service areas
  • evaluating patient survey feedback
  • providing input on our hospital strategy.

The committee has influenced many processes within the hospital including introducing a volunteer to assist in day surgery with meals and drinks, reviewing patient information to ensure it is reader friendly and more.

History of St John of God Ballarat Hospital

The Sisters of St John of God came to Ballarat in 1915 in response to a call from Bishop Higgins to help care for people in the community who were suffering from infectious diseases such as diphtheria and typhoid. The hospital took some time to become established due to the impact of World War I and the reluctance of the Ballarat community to attend a hospital run by the Sisters.

St John of God Ballarat Hospital established The School of Nursing, which operated from 1958 to 1990 and saw more than 800 nursing students through its doors. It closed in 1990 after the Australian Nursing Federation decision that all future nursing education would be university based.

St John of God Ballarat Hospital maintains a strong commitment to teaching our future nursing workforce, with nursing students still gaining their clinical experience at the hospital throughout their university degree.

Today, St John of God Ballarat Hospital is a modern and fast growing health care facility, boasting some of the best equipment, facilities, doctors and staff in the country.
