Community and social outreach
Giving back to the community and supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people is part of our commitment to social justice at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.
Charity of Choice
Each year we support a Charity of Choice to help those experiencing disadvantage.
Our current charity is Horizon House, West Leederville. Horizon House provides safe housing and holistic support for young parents and their babies who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Our caregivers hold fundraising initiatives throughout the year to raise awareness and raise much needed support for the organisation.
Community partnerships
Our Community Support Leave Policy encourages caregivers to volunteer their expertise by participating in and supporting social justice causes. The hospital also provides funding for a number of not-for-profit organisations.
CanTeen camps, programs and recreation days
Our caregivers volunteer at Canteen’s week-long camps, weekend programs and recreation days.
Canteen supports young people with cancer allowing them to learn, explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with others in the same situation and access specialist, youth-specific treatment teams.
St Vincent de Paul
Our caregivers generously support the St Vincent de Paul winter and Christmas appeals by donating hampers and gift cards to help families and individuals who need support.
Rafiki Surgical Missions
We contribute to the Rafiki Surgical Mission to Tanzania through caregivers volunteering their expertise and funding pharmaceutical and surgical supplies. Children in Tanzania benefit from surgery for cleft lip and palate and burns. Doctors and nurses in Tanzania work alongside the Australian medical team to build their reconstructive surgical skills.
Operation Rainbow Australia Ltd
The hospital funds pharmaceutical and surgical consumables and supplies for Operation Rainbow’s annual mission to Cebu in the Philippines, where they perform cleft lip and palate surgeries for children who normally would not have access to such life-changing procedures.
Australian Doctors For Africa (ADFA)
We support an ADFA mission to Madagascar, with our caregivers volunteering their expertise and funding pharmaceutical supplies.
ADFA is committed to effect significant change in health care and wellbeing through the provision of overseas medical teams, teaching and training programs and in-country support of infrastructure development.
History of St John of God Subiaco Hospital
St John of God Subiaco Hospital was founded in 1898 and was the first permanent facility established by the Sisters of St John of God.
In 1962, an upgrade to the hospital added an 85-bed maternity unit, which saw Subiaco Hospital become Perth’s leading private maternity hospital. Today, our iconic maternity service delivers thousands of babies each year.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the hospital established its prestigious surgical and medical teaching units and undertook a major rebuild. Over the years, this has allowed us to attract the highest calibre of doctors and make a significant contribution to medical education.
The hospital has continued to grow its services and facilities over the years and is currently investing in the largest redevelopment in its long history.
St John of God Subiaco Hospital remains at the leading edge of medicine and research, with a continued focus on improving services and facilities to ensure all members of its community, including patients, visitors, medical specialists, caregivers and volunteers, have the best possible experience.
