Orthopaedic and robotic assisted technology

We have a proud history of introducing orthopaedic innovations and are recognised as a national leader in robotic-assisted surgery:

  • 2015 – first hospital in Australia to install the Mako Surgical Robot
  • 2019 – first hospital in Australia and South East Asia to install a second Mako device
  • 2024 – first in the Southern Hemisphere to perform 5,000 Mako-assisted hip and knee replacements
  • 2024 – introduced the ROSA Knee Robotic System
  • 2025 - first hospital outside the USA to use the latest generation Mako 4

The record volume of Mako procedures performed at our hospital reflects the depth of experience of our surgical teams.

Some of our orthopaedic surgeons are also actively involved in research, exploring how technology and data can further improve patient outcomes.

More than 2,500 of our patients are enrolled in an international research trial capturing perioperative data and clinical outcomes – contributing to one of the most comprehensive datasets on joint replacement surgery globally.

Mako robotic assisted surgery

Our 3 Mako systems are used for:

  • partial knee replacement
  • total knee replacement
  • hip replacement.

The system creates a 3D model of your joint prior to surgery, allowing your surgeons to plan the procedure based on your specific anatomy.

During the operation, the surgeon guides the Mako’s robotic arm according to your pre-operative plan, with real-time feedback from the system supporting highly accurate positioning of the joint.

ROSA Knee System

Our ROSA Knee System is used to perform total knee replacement surgery.

Like the Mako, ROSA generates a 3D model of your anatomy before surgery, assisting surgeons with detailed planning.

During the procedure, it provides real-time data to assist with accuracy and alignment, helping to optimise outcomes.

Rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery

Rehabilitation starts while you are in hospital.

Your allied health team, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists, work with our nurses and doctors to help you to manage pain and being moving safely after surgery.

Your rehabilitation may continue at our hospital as an outpatient, with a range of physiotherapy and occupational therapy providers located conveniently onsite. You can also access our hydrotherapy pool to help you get moving after surgery. This is particularly beneficial after hip and knee surgery.

Located on our hospital’s campus, SportsMed Subiaco is one of the state’s leading sports injury facilities, and offers excellence in the diagnosis and management of sports injuries via physicians, physiotherapists, massage and pilates therapists.

Healthcare at Home

Your rehabilitation continues when you return home.

Our team of home visiting physiotherapists and occupational therapists can come to your home to help you recover and build up strength after orthopaedic surgery.

You do not need a referral to access this care — simply contact us to book your first visit.
