St John of God Murdoch Hospital is a private hospital and a division of St John of God Health Care, one of Australia's largest health care providers.
Continued expansion of the hospital since it opened in 1994 has grown it to include 525 beds, 18 operating theatres, an emergency department, a dedicated cancer care centre, WA's largest standalone endoscopy unit and a dedicated day procedure unit.
Our hospital campus also has the Murdoch Medical Centre and Wexford Medical Clinics which house a wide range of specialist healthcare consultants and services, and St John of God Murdoch Community Hospice.
We also offer a range of patient, visitor and clinical facilities at our hospital.
Research at St John of God Murdoch Hospital
We have seen significant growth in the research areas of clinical oncology trials, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, intensive care, cardiology and nursing-led research.
Many studies are delivering impressive results, with the focus on patient-centred care and improving outcomes.
- Emergency medicine research aims to improve patient treatments and outcomes in this growing field.
- Intensive care research focuses on improving care for critically ill patients who need lifesaving intervention or close monitoring after major surgery.
- Oncology clinical trials focus on improving treatments for people with cancers including breast, melanoma, colorectal, gastric, oesophageal, prostate, kidney, bladder and pancreas cancer.
- Orthopaedic research focuses on surgical innovation in joint replacement surgery and patient rehabilitation.

Djaalinj Waakinj Project
The Djaalinj Waakinj (listening and hearing) Project is a partnership between the The Kids Research Institute Australia, Paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon, Associate Professor George Sim, the Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines and Infectious Diseases, based at The Kids Research Institute Australia, Cockburn Integrated Health and St John of God Murdoch Hospital. It provides essential surgery at no cost for Aboriginal children experiencing severe ear infections.
The program has captured the hearts and minds of our caregivers. Alongside contributions from St John of God Health Care, caregivers have helped to fund the no-cost surgeries, through regular raffles, stalls and many other creative and heartfelt fundraising activities.

History of St John of God Murdoch Hospital
In 1989, St John of God Health Care, in partnership with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition and the Sisters of Mercy in Perth, proposed a new private hospital for Perth’s south metropolitan area. That proposal led to the development of St John of God Murdoch Hospital.
Founding Chief Executive Officer Bill Shields was appointed in 1991, and caregivers from St Joseph’s Hospital Bicton and St John of God Rivervale transferred to Murdoch ahead of its opening. The site was blessed on 21 September 1991, and the hospital welcomed its first patients on 14 February 1994.
Since then, the hospital has continued to grow, including a refurbished Emergency Department, additional operating theatres, and Orthonova Orthopaedic Hospital, on schedule for opening early 2027.
