St John of God Berwick Hospital was established in 1910 with the mission to provide high-quality, compassionate health care to the Berwick community and surrounding areas.
With more than 200 beds and over 900 caregivers, we provide an extensive range of health care services including:
- day surgery
- medical and surgical services
- maternity
- cancer care
- intensive care

- consulting.
Our other facilities include 8 operating theatres and 2 consulting suites.
The original Gibb Street hospital underwent a redevelopment and transitioned to a custom-designed mental health facility in mid-2022. This is now known as St John of God Langmore Centre. This new development saw the St John of God Berwick Hospital relocate to Kangan Drive, Berwick.
Community and social outreach
We have a long history of working with and helping people within the community and each year we direct a portion of revenue to programs within the community.
As a not-for-profit hospital, we reinvest our profits into three core areas of support:
- new hospital services and technologies
- social outreach activities within our community
- international health.
Raphael Services
Berwick Raphael Services is our flagship community outreach service, funded by the hospital.
We offer specialist perinatal mental health support to families in Casey and Cardinia — the only service of its kind in Melbourne's south-east corridor.
Raphael Services provides:
- individual and group therapy programs to promote recovery from antenatal and postnatal mood disorders to help prevent long term difficulties
- early detection, intervention and support for families at their most vulnerable
- information and education for new parents.
Parents may access the service during pregnancy or in the 2 years following the birth of their baby.
Families can self-refer or seek a referral from a GP or specialist.
Day Oncology and Infusion Centre
Our 12-chair Day Oncology and Infusion Centre opened in April 2015 to meet the growing demand for cancer services. With 1500 people diagnosed each year in Casey and Cardinia, the centre provides much needed support and treatment.
We thank those who provide generous financial support, which helps us continue to develop this service.
Community wig service
An innovative community wig service launched early in 2016. Thanks to the funds donated by our community, we are able to loan a wig to people with cancer-related hair loss.
Our dedicated team of volunteers helps this service to continue to grow and thrive.
History of St John of God Berwick Hospital
The first health care facility on Gloucester Avenue, Berwick, was Shepton Private Hospital, opened in 1910 by Dr Percy Langmore and Nurse Grace Dunphy. In 1925, Shepton Hospital was renamed St Leonard's Private Hospital. By 1948, it had become clear that the hospital needed to expand. Public fundraising supported the redevelopment of the existing building, and additional land was purchased in 1953. As a result, The Percy Langmore Wing opened on 3 May 1953. Four additional wards were added, along with an operating theatre, birthing ward and a new kitchen, increasing the hospital’s capacity to treat 275 patients each year.
Further developments in the 1970s introduced occupational therapy, a nursing home, and casualty and outpatient services. In 1987, the hospital changed its name to Berwick Hospital Inc.
St John of God Health Care purchased the hospital in 2003 and began a period of expansion and modernisation that would help meet the health care demands of the growing population of Casey and Cardinia. Since then numerous significant developments have been made over the last few years such as the St John of God Berwick Specialist Centre opening at Kangan Drive in 2014, the opening of the new St John of God Hospital at Kangan Drive in 2018, and the development of the original hospital which is now known as the St John of God Langmore Centre.
As we continue to grow with our community, planning is underway for the next stage of development at Kangan Drive with importance placed on providing services of importance as indicated by the community, and is likely to include an emergency department, more theatres, specialised inpatient units and purpose built rehabilitation services.
