Personality disorders

Borderline personality disorder refers to an ongoing condition in which people often experience overwhelming emotions, deep feelings of insecurity and impulsive behaviour. We are here to support and help you understand and manage your condition.

St John of God Health Care personality disorders

We may offer dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), an evidence-based therapy which is widely-used for people who have borderline personality disorder, or strong traits of this disorder.

You may be diagnosed with a personality disorder if:

  • you have a history of self-destructive or impulsive behaviour which affects you and those around you, including frequent mood swings
  • your emotions, thoughts and behaviour make it difficult for you to go about your day-to-day life
  • find it hard to change the way you do things, even when it negatively affects your ability to hold a job or maintain relationships with people.

About our program

Research shows DBT is very effective in reducing suicidal behaviour, deliberate self-harm, hospitalisation, substance use, anger, depression and in improving general quality of life.

The therapy focuses on enhancing your motivation and increasing your own capabilities.

Topics may include:

  • mindfulness
  • distress tolerance
  • emotion regulation
  • interpersonal effectiveness.
