Parent education

As one of Perth's leading maternity hospitals we offer a range of parent education classes for mums and dads covering what to expect during pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of parenthood.

Our parent education at St John of God Subiaco Hospital is tailored to support you at every stage of your maternity journey and includes:

We also offer classes for grandparents, as well as specialist classes if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Our parent education is run by experienced midwives and features special presentations by specialists including anaesthetists, physiotherapists and psychologists.

Parent education classes are available to parents who are booked to have their baby at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

Some classes are free and others incur a charge which may be covered by your health fund. After booking your parent education using the form below, one of our administrative assistants will contact you to confirm your booking and process payment.

Maternity tours

Our antenatal parent education package includes a tour of our maternity ward, however you can choose to attend a tour at any stage during your pregnancy journey. You do not have to be booked to give birth at our hospital to attend. Please note bookings are essential as places are limited.

Antenatal parent education

We offer a range of parent education options for you and your partner during pregnancy which cover a range of topics to help you prepare to welcome your baby into the world. We offer a comprehensive birth and parenting package or you can book our individual classes to suit your education needs.

The Birth and Parenting Package is our most popular course for new parents and is run over three evening sessions (either Mondays or Wednesdays) or as a single full-day workshop (Fridays or Saturdays). The package includes Healthy Pregnancy and Beyond class and Epidural and Caesarean class. We also offer a tailored version of this course for women expecting twins and triplets.

Topics covered: physical wellbeing, emotional health and coping strategies, relationships and support networks, partner's role during pregnancy, safe food guidelines, breastfeeding preparation and preparing your nursery, what to expect during labour and birth, pain relief, role of support person, natural and caesarean births, postnatal care for mum and baby, breastfeeding, safe sleeping, infant behaviour and development, emotional wellbeing and maternity ward tour.

Topics covered: breastfeeding principles, attachment and positioning, infant behaviour and feeding cues and practical tips for common feeding issues. Please note some of the content of this workshop is covered in the birth and parenting antenatal education package.

Topics covered: birthing, the role of grandparents, infant feeding updates, safe sleeping practices, child safety, vaccination requirements and being supportive without being intrusive.

  • Cost: $30 each or $50 a couple

This class is designed for women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and are giving birth at St John of God Subiaco Hospital. Please speak to your obstetrician for a referral to this class.

Topics covered: what is gestational diabetes, how it affects pregnancy, understanding and monitoring your blood levels, what to eat based on your blood results, how gestational diabetes can affect your baby and blood monitoring equipment.

In-hospital parent education 

When you choose to give birth at St John of God Subiaco Hospital, you and your partner have access to a range of free parent education sessions during your stay with us to help you negotiate the first days of parenting.

Classes

  • Physiotherapy class provided by Genesis Physiotherapy - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9.00am to 9.30am in the Ward 54 Seminar Room
  • New parents and refresher class - Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 10.15am in the Nursery
  • Lactation class - Monday to Saturday 10.15am to 11.30am in the Ward 54 Seminar Room
  • Bathing demonstration - Monday to Saturday 11.45am to 12.00pm and Sunday 1.00pm to 1.30pm in the Nursery

Postnatal parent education

The first weeks and months of parenthood are exciting, exhausting and often full of the unexpected, especially if you are a first-time parent.

After you have left St John of God Subiaco Hospital we offer ongoing education and support services to help you navigate the early stages of parenthood.

These classes are free and no booking is required to attend.

This small-group session offers general support with breastfeeding and lactation after you have left the hospital. Each session is limited to six women and their babies. Bookings are essential.

A weekly meet up session for parents who have given birth at St John of God Subiaco Hospital which you are welcome to attend whenever you are ready. Midwives and lactation consultants are on hand to answer any questions you have in a welcoming environment where you can meet other new parents and form life-long friendships.
