A staged transformation of our hospital that will enable us to meet the future health care needs of Ballarat.
St John of God Ballarat Hospital has been of service to the Ballarat community for 105 years. During this time we have committed to patient-centric care in line with our values of Hospitality, Compassion, Respect, Justice and Excellence. In order to continue to meet the growing needs of Ballarat and surrounds St John of God Ballarat Hospital has made a significant capital investment which will see much needed infrastructure and capacity upgrades to the existing facility.

There are a number of components in the planned redevelopment.

Within the existing Medical Services Building works include:

  • Upgraded Central Sterilising Department
  • Relocated Pathology
  • Upgraded Cath Lab
  • New theatre amenities and support spaces including recovery

Within the new tower located on Drummond street:

  • 30-bed Inpatient Ward
  • 10-bed Intensive Care / Critical Care Unit
  • Four theatres
  • Support spaces for the above
  • Future Proofing for an additional two theatres and five ICU/CCU beds
  • Future Proofing for additional levels in Stage 2 and 3

Works are due to commence from 5 July 2022.
There are multiple stages within the redevelopment, however the final handover date for completion is quarter two in 2024.
The main temporary visitor car park entry will be adjacent to the Emergency Department (entry off Mair Street). There will be signage which will show drop off areas and longer term parking.

Read more information about our parking and hospital entry arrangements.
Whilst there may be some changes to our visitor restrictions due to changes with COVID-19 restrictions, the redevelopment will not impact visiting hours.

The hospital has undergone extensive planning to ensure that all services will continue with no disruptions during the staged redevelopment.

Through working with all of our caregivers, medical practitioners and visitors to the hospital via regular communication and progress updates, all of the stakeholders will be kept well informed.
