Mindfulness can be considered a state of consciousness by paying attention to our present experience in an open-minded and accepting manner.
What would I be doing if I were mindful?
- Observe and notice what is happening in and around you in the here and now
- Describing whatever I find in the present – just the facts
- Not pass judgement.
Benefits of mindfulness
Benefits of mindfulness may include:
- better concentration
- reduced anxiety and depression
- increased self-control and willpower
- a greater empathy and compassion
- reduced pain sensitivity.
These benefits depend on your particular circumstances and require you to fully participate in necessary care and management. You should consult a specialist in this area before deciding whether treatment is suitable for you.
Anyone referred by an accredited psychiatrist can access this program.
A component of self-compassion has recently been included in this program. Self-compassion can help us heal our wounds with love and kindness through three components:
- loving kindness – being warm and understanding toward ourselves
- common humanity – recognising that suffering and personal inadequacy is part of the human experience
- mindfulness – being aware that we are unkind to ourselves.
