In one sentence, describe your overall experience of our graduate program
My overall graduate experience proved to be one that was completely supported, in an absolute positive environment, which enabled me to successfully bridge theory to practice and smoothly transition into my nursing career.
What would you say are some of the key benefits of doing a graduate program with St John of God Health Care?
A key benefit was the opportunity to work on different wards, which exposed me to a variety of nursing skills, providing a comprehensive introduction to my nursing career. As part of the Pathways to Practice program, building my nursing portfolio supported me to reflect and evidence my learning. This enabled me to gain confidence in my practice and see how much I had grown over the 12 months.
I found SJGHC to also acknowledge the importance of a healthy work-life balance, providing a flexible rostering system.
What feelings did you experience on your first days and weeks of the graduate program, and how were you supported through these early stages?
The initial days and weeks were quite nerve-racking and at times overwhelming, however having completed several placements at SJGHC as part of the partnership program, I had confidence that I would be well supported and welcomed by a team that truly lives up to the SJGHC values. The Learning and Organisational Development team and all of the caregivers were approachable and always more than willing to answer questions, give advice or just provide a listening ear. The additional study days, along with numerous online educational modules, really provided extra support in solidifying my knowledge and skills.
What learning were you provided and how did this help you determine your future career path/speciality?
Moving forward, my grad experience has provided me with confidence to continue to seek professional development opportunities with the support of SJGHC.
What advice can you offer others considering the graduate program?
For future graduates considering SJGHC I couldn’t recommend it enough. From the endless support, to a welcoming environment, and a hospital that adheres to its values, it honestly sells itself. Go for it - you won’t regret it!
