Dr Salamonsen completed his specialist medical training in respiratory medicine in Melbourne, Victoria, before moving to Brisbane to complete a PhD on pleural interventions, and then travelling overseas for an interventional bronchoscopy fellowship in Barcelona, Spain.

He has a broad skillset in interventional pulmonology and bronchoscopy, including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) or lung biopsy, endobronchial valve insertion for treatment of emphysema or airleaks, rigid bronchoscopy, manangement of central airways obstruction, resection of central airway tumours, tracheobronchial stenting, transbronchial cryobiopsy, pleural ultrasound, medical thoracoscopy and management of malignant pleural effusion with indwelling pleural catheters or pleurodesis.

He works at Murdoch Chest, St John of God Murdoch Hospital and also at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

He is actively involved in research with current projects on transbronchial lung cryobiopsy for the investigation of interstitial lung disease and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) elastography.
