"It is a common misconception that issues with your back or spine only occur in older people in our population," said Dr Baddour.
"Disc prolapse in either the neck or lower back is one of the most common spinal conditions and this occurs most prominently in the 35 to 60 year-old age range.
"The condition occurs when the disc that is located between the bones of the spine becomes painful when the soft inner part starts to separate from the hard outer case.
"Some people are predisposed to the condition while others, such as athletes, can put excess stress or strain on the back which can result in a more advanced case earlier in life."
Dr Baddour’s tips to keep your spine healthy:
- Lift correctly – always use your legs instead of your back to lift heavy objects.
- Try to keep your weight within the BMI range for your height – a healthy weight can reduce strain on your back as well as general inflammation of your joints.
- Do exercise that strengthens your back and core muscles such as Pilates as these muscles will support your spine.
- Wear appropriate footwear that supports your feet and keep your spine in alignment.
- Office ergonomics - it is important to have your office set up to support you especially as many people are now working from home.
- Limit sitting for too long or try to use a standing desk regularly.
- Eat a balanced diet as this can reduce inflammation.
