Inaugural recipients of donor funded research grants announced

St John of God Subiaco Hospital is one of Australia’s premier private research institutes, with a team of researchers dedicated to solving relevant health care issues relating to our community and the world through research. 

To continue building on this vital work and in partnership with St John of God Foundation, St John of God Subiaco Hospital announced the launch of a new research grants program earlier this year. 

The St John of God Foundation Research Grants aim to further support and grow St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s world class clinician-led research, with the ultimate goal of improving patient care, treatment and health care outcomes through translatable research.

We are pleased to congratulate the inaugural winners of the 2022 St John of God Foundation Research Grants, who were announced last week during our annual hospital Research Week events.

In the Early Career Researcher Grant category, the successful recipient of the $15,000 grant was Dr Alannah Cooper. Dr Cooper will be using the funding to develop an instrument to measure nurse resilience. 

In the Seed Funding category, the judges’ panel recommended awarding the $50,000 funding to two recipients – Professor Allan Kermode and Dr Alannah Cooper. 

Using the seed funding, Professor Kermode will be studying employing serum neurofilament light chain measures for management of multiple sclerosis, while Dr Cooper’s mixed methods study will be identifying barriers to palliative care access.

The new grants program will be reviewed at the end of the initial pilot phase, with the ultimate goal of growing the program in future years through connecting philanthropic donations and community support with more of our research-active hospitals.
