Where we are
Dr Andrew Parsonson is a consultant medical oncologist currently appointed at Nepean Hospital, Macquarie University Hospital and Hawkesbury District Health Service. He completed subspecialty medical oncology training through multiple metropolitan and regional hospitals including Liverpool, Campbelltown, Bankstown-Lidcombe, Dubbo, Nepean and the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney. He obtained fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2021. Post-fellowship, he worked as a medical oncologist at Campbelltown Hospital and the Southern Highlands Cancer Centre in Bowral, prior to returning as a staff specialist in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.
His primary clinical interests are in breast and gastrointestinal cancers, but he is skilled in managing general oncology and all solid tumours.
Dr Parsonson is passionate about bringing the latest treatments to his patients and is an investigator on numerous international phase I – III clinical trials of novel investigational agents to treat solid malignancies.
Alongside his clinical work, he completed a Masters of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) through the University of Sydney and is currently completing a part-time PhD through the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) at Macquarie University, exploring the use of digital health to improve patient access to cancer clinical trials.
Dr Parsonson is involved in dedicated teaching of medical students and holds an academic appointment as a conjoint senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences Macquarie University and is also a lecturer at the Nepean Clinical School, at the University of Sydney.
He is the incoming chair of the Young Oncologists’ Group of Australia and has a strong interest in the education and professional development of trainees and young oncologists. He is also appointed to the drug utilisation subcommittee (DUSC) of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) to provide advice on oncology drug utilisation to the Australian Government.
