Where we are

Dr Daniel Ellyard is a specialist anaesthetist and pain medicine physician.   

Prior to completing his medical training he completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at The University of Melbourne, where he majored in neurophysiology. It was here he first developed his interest in the neurobiology of pain.   

Following completion of his primary degree, he moved to Adelaide where he completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery through Flinders University graduating in 2005.   

He moved to Perth in 2006 to complete his internship at Royal Perth Hospital and has remained here ever since.  

He completed his anaesthetic training in the Western Australian training rotation and undertook a fellowships in ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia and obstetric anaesthesia in 2012, during which time he additionally completed a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound through The University of Melbourne.  

He was awarded his FANZCA at the beginning of 2013 and commenced practice as a specialist anaesthetist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and in private practice.   

Following five years of practice as a Specialist Anaesthetist, he returned to further study, completing a two-year fellowship in multidisciplinary Pain Medicine, specialising in interventional procedures including neuromodulation and palliative interventional techniques.  He was awarded a FFPMANZCA in February 2020.    

Daniel currently practices at Optimise Pain Management in addition to continuing to work as a Specialist Anaesthetist in the Department of  Anaesthesia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.   

He has a special interest in the neurobiology of pain, especially the effects of stress, trauma and inflammation in the processing of pain signals, as well as the transition of acute to chronic pain. He is passionate about the use of interventional techniques, including neuromodulation and palliative cancer pain procedure to improve pain, function and quality of life.   He is involved in research and education, teaching physiology and pharmacology to anaesthetic and pain medicine trainees. He additionally is the research co-ordinator at the Sir Charles Gairdner Pain Medicine Unit.   

Outside of work Daniel enjoys keeping fit and spending time with his young family.
