Physiotherapist Nikki Strahan explains what cardiac rehabilitation is and the benefits it can offer

What is cardiac rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is a program of exercise, education and support led by qualified health professionals.

The aim of cardiac rehabilitation is to foster long-term lifestyle changes and support patients to live a longer, healthier life.

Who would benefit from cardiac rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is recommended for anyone who has had a heart attack, stent or open heart surgery.

It is also recommended for individuals with coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, or heart failure.

People with risk factors for heart disease also benefit from participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program.

When should a patient begin a cardiac rehabilitation program?

We encourage patients to start cardiac rehabilitation when they are medically stable and feel ready.

Although there are many benefits to starting early, it is never too late.

What does the program involve?

SportsMed Subiaco Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a six week group exercise program led by physiotherapists.

Sessions are one hour long and held twice weekly, however the program can be adapted to patients’ needs.

Exercises are prescribed individually, taking into account medical history, previous injuries and fitness levels.

Heart rate and perceived level of exertion are monitored throughout the session, and heart rate and blood pressure are taken once the session is complete.

The program includes an individual assessment prior and reassessment once the program is completed.

What are the benefits of participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program?

There are many proven benefits to participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program, including:

  • improved exercise tolerance and muscle strength
  • improved mental health and wellbeing
  • reduced risk factors and symptoms, such as shortness of breath
  • reduced recurrent events, hospital admissions and mortality
