Dr Bolsin, who has earned recognition in the UK and Australia for his contributions to improving patient safety and clinical governance frameworks, started in the role with Australia’s largest Catholic not-for-profit hospital group on 6 May 2019.

He comes into the position after working as the Director of Medical Services at St John of God Geelong Hospital, where he was responsible for the hospital’s quality, safety, clinical governance and medical workforce.

St John of God Health Care Group Chief Executive Officer Dr Shane Kelly said Steve’s experience, including being pivotal in strengthening clinical governance across the NHS in the UK, is invaluable to the organisation.

“Leading and advocating a supportive culture is essential to developing best practice clinical governance and improved patient care,” Dr Kelly said.

“We are excited to have Steve take on this national position and bring his wealth of experience and proven results. He will have a key leadership role in relation to patient safety, quality improvement and overall clinical governance across St John of God Health Care.”

Dr Bolsin said throughout his career the importance of developing a strong culture focused on patient safety and outcomes had been highlighted to him time and again.

“Providing consistently excellent patient care requires a systematic approach which identifies the right guidelines and protocols, provides the necessary supports in facilities, equipment and services, and ensures that the team is functioning as well as it can,” he said.

“If everybody is focusing on the best outcome for the patient, you also end up with the best outcome for the organisation and the clinicians.

“I am looking forward to working closely with my colleagues to lead strong clinical improvement programs and initiatives nationally, and build on St John of God Health Care’s reputation for providing consistently excellent patient care.”
