Celebrating our midwives across the continuum

Midwifery is defined by the World Health Organisation as “skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate care for childbearing women, newborn infants and families across the continuum from pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and the early weeks of life.”

At St John of God Health Care we are very fortunate to have a highly-skilled midwifery workforce who work in a variety of roles which extend across the continuum, beyond bringing babies into the world, including provision of education, clinical practice, lactation consultancy, postnatal care, research and more.

The tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of our midwives, whether a graduate midwife starting out with us, or highly experienced, is not only appreciated but essential to the success of our hospitals and services.

The international theme for International Day of the Midwife this year, Together again: from evidence to reality, is a nod to the upcoming 33rd ICM Triennial Congress, where the global midwife community will come together for the first time in more than five years.

It also honours the efforts of midwives and their associations to action critical evidence, like the State of the World’s Midwifery 2021 towards urgent investment in midwives to enable them to fulfil their potential to contribute towards Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.
