St John of God Horizon House provides homes, care and support for young people aged 16-22 who are experiencing, or at risk of homelessness. For Ryan*, being supported through the process of obtaining a driver’s licence has been a life-changing experience.

Getting a driver’s licence is a rite of passage for many young adults. It can open up opportunities for further education, employment, training, as well as independence and a sense of pride.

For many young people in our Horizon House program like Ryan, obtaining a driver’s license is an important milestone in moving toward their goal of independent living.

Unfortunately, there can be significant barriers for many young people in gaining a driver’s license including cost, access to a car and the ability to complete hours of supervised driving, among other factors.

In December last year, Ryan went against the odds and claimed this rite of passage, gaining his driver’s license permit, a huge personal achievement. Ryan is thrilled to have his license and celebrated by going on his first solo drive to visit friends living out of town.

Ryan was ecstatic about gaining his license, saying, “I was so happy when the instructor told me I’d passed the test, I almost couldn’t believe it. All of my hard work paid off and I’m excited about the future and what life is going to look like now. I’m going to start applying for jobs that require a driver’s license… maybe I’ll be able to able to move into my own place soon!”

Horizon House WA State Manager Dana Anderson says having a driver’s license can positively impact the direction of a young person’s future.

“We see time and time again that being able to drive directly helps a young person secure employment. For many industries, having a valid driver’s license is an essential requirement in the recruitment process.”
