Our leading nurses and midwives earn new scholarships to support their careers

The inaugural St John of God Health Care Midwifery Scholarship was announced this week, with the nurses and midwives coming from our hospitals across the country; Ballarat, Bendigo, Berwick, Geelong, Hawkesbury, Midland, Murdoch and Subiaco.

The local caregivers will use the scholarship to advance their skills to better support patients and babies, including receiving additional qualifications in lactation and breastfeeding, and gestational diabetes management.

St John of God Health Care Group Director Workforce Carla Bonev congratulated the scholarship recipients and said it was wonderful to be able to support so many nurses and midwives to advance their careers.

“We were thrilled to be supporting so many of our nurses and midwives through this scholarship to advance their skills so they can provide high quality, contemporary care to women, babies and families,” she said.

“It is also pleasing to be able to support the career development and professional growth of our caregivers.

“The range of additional skills and training that our successful recipients will be undertaking ranges from studying a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery, Masters of Midwifery, to breastfeeding and lactation, obstetric life support, gestational diabetes and perinatal mental health courses.”

The scholarship will cover the full fee for each recipient individual courses.

The St John of God Health Care Midwifery Scholarship aims to encourage nurses into the midwifery profession, as well as build on the capability of our existing midwifery workforce. 

“The scholarship is part of a broader initiative to upskill and attract midwives and nurses, and recognise caregivers who are committed to their development, and who will make a strong and positive contribution to the life of St John of God Health Care,” Carla said.

“We are currently supporting almost 100 caregivers through scholarships at St John of God Health Care to support their career development and professional growth, while also ensuring we are providing our communities with the highest quality, contemporary care.”
