Horizon House resident receives award nomination

Horizon House provides long-term accommodation and support to vulnerable young people aged 16 to 22 years who are currently experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness while they access education, training and employment opportunities.

old Horizon House Geraldton resident, Darren’s hard work has been recognised by the City of Greater Geraldton who nominated him for the Australia Day Youth Awards 2020.

Darren volunteers at the Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Services (GRAMS), assisting with their Healthy Choices Program.

He has also been involved with the Police and Community Youth Centre (PCYC) for a number of years and works as a volunteer boxing teacher in their after school programs.

“GRAMS and PCYC needed a young leader, so I decided to step up,” Darren said.

Darren completed year 12 while volunteering and working in a casual retail role. He is now working at MEEDAC Aboriginal Corporation.

He moved into Horizon House Geraldton after finding out about the Program through the PCYC.

“I needed my own space and wanted to be independent,” Darren said.

“Horizon House has helped keep me focused on my future and reminded me of what’s important in life,” he said.

“The best thing about the Program is having my own space and becoming friends with my housemates.

“My priority now is to save for a car and move into my own apartment.”
