Black Swan Prize artworks on show at hospitals

The four hospitals will display a range of artworks entered into the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture throughout public areas.

The exhibitions are part of St John of God Health Care’s sponsorship of the prize, which attracts up to 500 artists each year, as well as a demonstration of our commitment to promoting the benefits arts brings to health and wellbeing.

St John of God Health Care Group Chief Executive Officer Dr Shane Kelly said displaying the Black Swan Portraiture Prize artworks at our hospitals also provided a great opportunity for the wider community to appreciate art and celebrate local artistic talent.

“Our hospitals are designed to provide welcoming and healing environments and include dedicated spaces for the arts for all to enjoy,” he said.

“The Black Swan Portraiture Prize is the third richest art prize in Australia, and the calibre of the pieces submitted is very high. We look forward to welcoming the community into our hospitals to see a selection of artworks.”

Dr Kelly said a growing body of research was showing that participating in and enjoying the arts was an important way to improve your overall wellbeing.

“We believe in the ability for the arts to have a healing role in many aspects of people’s lives and it plays a key role in our Mission to heal,” he said.

“We are grateful to be able to provide opportunities for people to enjoy the many benefits of the arts in our hospitals.”

Selected artworks will tour St John of God Subiaco, Murdoch, Midland and Mt Lawley hospitals until 6 February 2019.
