New iPads installed for St John of God Subiaco Hospital paediatric patients

Keeping our youngest patients entertained while they are in hospital is no easy feat, but installing iPads in the playroom of one of our wards is helping kids beat boredom.

Recognising that the little things matter just as much to our youngest patients and in response to NPS feedback, St John of God Subiaco Hospital Nurse Manager Eilish Russie had an idea inspired by a visit to the dentist with her own children.

“I wondered why my kids wanted to get to the dentist early and soon discovered it was so they could play on the iPads in the waiting room,” she said.

She worked closely with the St John of God Subiaco Hospital engineering team and had two new iPads installed onto a wall cabinet in the playroom.

Our paediatric patients now have five games to choose from including LEGO, minions and candy crush with serious competition already occurring for the highest scores.

The promise of iPad time is also helping to encourage young post-op patients to get out of bed and onto their feet.

“It is good for post-op patients as it encourages them to get up and move around a little bit, as it is only a short walk down to the playroom,” Eilish said.
