Horizon House helps Louise realise passion in helping others

Horizon House Ballarat resident, Louise, is on her way to pursuing her passion in health care after joining the program one year ago.

19-year-old Louise moved into Horizon House Ballarat after experiencing overcrowding in her home environment.

 

Louise who is now in tier one of the program is completing a 12-month traineeship towards a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) with Federation University and is due to complete her studies in January 2019.

 

Horizon House operates a three tier program whereby tier one includes accommodation and intensive support for up to 12 months.

 

“I’ve always been an empathetic person and feel as though a carer’s job really fits me,” Louise said.

 

“The job itself is really rewarding and I’m glad to be able to help people.”

After completing her studies, Louise plans on enrolling into a Diploma of Nursing with an aim to complete her Bachelor’s degree and pursue a career as a registered nurse.

 

Horizon House Support Coordinator Emily Jacobson said she's really proud of Louise and how far she has come in building her confidence and determination to achieve her goals.

 

"Louise has learned invaluable skills such as cooking and budgeting which will help her live a more productive, self-sufficient and confident life." Emily said.

 

Louise said these skills have helped her feel more independent.

“I think I’m a much better cook now and feel more comfortable in the kitchen overall,” Louise said.

 

“I’ve also learned how to budget which has helped me manage my money better.”

 

According to Louise, the best part about the program is that it provides stability, structure, routine and the support she needs.

 

“I now have a fresh, new outlook on life because the program has given me the opportunity to set goals and achieve them,” Louise said.

 

“I would tell anyone in a similar position to me that the Horizon House is a great program because it provides support in a happy, healthy environment.”

 

Horizon House provides long-term accommodation and support to vulnerable young people aged 16 to 22 years who are currently experiencing, or are at risk of homelessness while they access education, training and employment opportunities.
