Orthopaedics Rehabilitation
The first step after orthopaedic surgery is to get out of bed without too much pain and in a safe manner. Then you have to consider – how to get back into bed.

Our Physiotherapist Toby Vague explains the best technique for returning to your bed safely after hip or knee surgery.

Firstly, don’t get out of bed on your own until your physiotherapist has advised you it is safe to do so.

As a patient in our hospital, you should use your call bell to seek assistance. We don’t want you falling over.

Getting into bed

  • Step 1 – Sit on the side of the bed, as close to the pillows as possible
  • Step 2 – Place your bottom as far back on the bed as you can
  • Step 3 – Use a bar above your bed, or place your hands behind you to help ease back onto the bed
  • Step 4 – When in hospital, nurses will help swivel your legs to get them onto bed. As your strength returns you will be able to manage this step yourself.
  • Step 5 – Relax
