Preventing preterm births

Maternity Podcast
Did you know approximately 20-40% of premature births are related to bacterial infections of the reproductive tract?

In our latest health and wellness podcast episode, St John of God Subiaco Hospital Obstetrician and Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr Michael Gannon provides insights into the factors that lead to preterm birth.

Dr Gannon also discusses the Preterm Birth Prevention Study that is in progress at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

The potentially life-saving trial aims to identify patients who are at risk of giving birth early due to a bacterial infection. For women who return a positive test result, the study is also testing whether a probiotic treatment regimen can be used to prevent preterm birth from occurring.

If successful, this testing and treatment program will be a major breakthrough in pregnancy care and will likely save the lives of hundreds of Western Australian infants and many more worldwide. To read more about the study, visit sjog.org.au/subiaconews
