Oncologist crowned Murdoch’s top doctor for 2023

St John of God Murdoch Hospital proudly announces Dr Sanjay Mukhedkar as the recipient of this year’s prestigious Doctor of the Year award.

Dr Mukhedkar, originally from Hyderabad, India, embarked on his medical journey at Osmania Medical College and since then has had a diverse career spanning across India, New Zealand, America, and Australia, making him a globally acclaimed oncologist.

Starting as a general surgeon, Sanjay transitioned to oncology in his late twenties. His commitment to medical excellence and patient care led to the establishment of Oncology West with Associate Professor Kynan Feeney and Dr Daphne Tsoi in 2010, now the largest private group of cancer specialists in Western Australia.

St John of God Murdoch Hospital CEO Ben Irish presented the honour, in front of his family and colleagues on Thursday night in a celebration by the lake on the grounds of St John of God Murdoch Hospital.

Mr Irish thanked Dr Mukhedkar for his endless commitment, compassion, and care for his patients, colleagues and everyone in between.

“Sanjay is truly the embodiment of everything we work to achieve here at Murdoch and we cannot think of anyone more deserving for this award,” he said.

“His contributions to the hospital have elevated our standards, and we are privileged to celebrate his exceptional achievements as Doctor of the Year for 2023.”

Sanjay’s newest venture is with Cyclowest, who are committed to providing nuclear treatment to patients around the world. Sanjay is working with the team to achieve its vision of developing modern cyclotron and GMP radiopharmaceutical facilities for Australian domestic and Asia-Pacific markets.

Beyond his medical prowess, Sanjay’s second biggest love is cricket, which was evident through his establishment of the Australia Indian Medical Association cricket team. For Sanjay, this was a great way to bring colleagues together and to have fun on the fields, with the goal of focusing on mental and physical health.

Many colleagues at St John of God Murdoch Hospital expressed gratitude to Dr Sanjay Mukhedkar for his unwavering commitment, compassion, and exemplary patient care, describing him as an embodiment of the hospital’s values.
