Orthonova: breaking new ground together

On Thursday 31 July 2025, St John of God Murdoch Hospital marked an exciting new chapter in the journey to bring Orthonova to life – gathering not just to turn soil, but to recognise the shared commitment, effort and unity that has defined this project from the very beginning.

We were privileged to be joined by First Nations Elders, Karen and Elisha Jacobs, who shared with us a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. Reverend Father Pius offered a Blessing, and we were joined by key representatives including Mr Gary Tuffin from the City of Melville, and colleagues from Group Services, the Orthonova Surgeon Management Group, Hesperia, and Built.

While the day honoured an important milestone, it was a chance to pause and reflect on what’s been achieved through genuine partnership, and the strength of the relationships that have brought us here. More than a structural project it is a first-of-its-kind collaboration across surgeons, developers, builders, and health care professionals, united by a shared vision: to create a world-class centre of excellence for orthopaedics in Western Australia.

As we look ahead to the next phase, we do so with deep appreciation for the collaboration that has defined this journey so far. It is this partnership, fixed in innovation and mutual respect, that will carry us forward as we bring Orthonova to life.

Orthonova is Western Australia’s first specialist orthopaedic hospital, established as an innovative joint venture between St John of God Health Care, a group of Perth’s leading orthopaedic surgeons, and property developer Hesperia. Located on the eastern side of the current St John of God Murdoch Hospital campus, within the Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct, the four-storey facility will be purpose-built for orthopaedic excellence - featuring cutting-edge robotic joint replacement technology, four advanced operating theatres, day-surgery suites, and dedicated inpatient wards.

Designed with patient comfort in mind, Orthonova promises personalised, world-class care underpinned by the highest standard of clinical quality and safety.
