The Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Service has been made possible via the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia thanks to funding from the Federal Government and generous local and community supporters.

Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse Russell Reyes said he was delighted with the extension of his position at Murdoch, which is now funded until mid-2023.

Russell has been instrumental in assisting Murdoch’s prostate patients and engaging with specialists and members of the Murdoch team. He has also recently been helping our da Vinci robotics cases.

Russell said the extension means that men and their families affected by prostate cancer will have ongoing support from the time they get diagnosed, to navigating treatment, managing sexual dysfunction and side effects, up until survivorship – empowering men in decisions that may seem overwhelming, while tailoring it for each individual.

“After getting the grim news of cancer, I strive for men to be well informed and develop confidence having their health in their hands, working with the amazing team we have at Murdoch,” he said.

“I want men to feel that they do not have to take the journey alone and that there are people who do care and want to lighten their burden.

“A part of the PCSN service is men having a ‘go-to’ person co-ordinating their care across different teams especially for multi-modal treatments.

“The continued service complements St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s endeavour to be the Prostate Cancer Centre of Excellence housing state-of-the art treatments such as the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery, together with the Radiotherapy Linear Accelerators and Theranostics treatment centres becoming available by next year.”
