Gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery

Three caregivers transporting a patient in bed in the hospital

Gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery provides care for gastrointestinal conditions which relate to the stomach and intestines.

We care for a range of conditions from common digestive complaints such as reflux and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) through to more serious conditions such as coeliac disease, hepatitis, liver cancer and bowel cancer.

Our exerienced multidisciplinary team is highly skilled at providing treatment and care to help you manage your condition so you can continue enjoying your daily life.

Our gastroenterology services

Many gastrointestinal procedures, such as endoscopies and colonoscopies, can be carried out as day surgery. Other procedures, such as stomach or liver surgery, may require an overnight stay or multiple days in hospital.

Common gastrointestinal tests and procedures we perform include:

  • gastroscopy
  • oesophageal manometry
  • colonoscopy
  • capsule endoscopy
  • endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • balloon enteroscopy
  • endoscopic ultrasound.

Gastroscopy

A gastroscopy can help investigate symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing and gastrointestinal bleeding. It can also be used to take small tissue samples for testing to help diagnose conditions such as infection, coeliac disease and cancer. In some cases, your doctor can use an endoscopy to treat issues such as stopping bleeding, widening a narrowed oesophagus or removing polyps.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a type of endoscopy procedure used to examine the rectum and large intestine for conditions such as inflammation, ulcers or cancer. It is commonly used for colorectal cancer screening to detect and remove pre-cancerous polyps as well as investigating symptoms such as belly pain, bleeding or diarrhea.

ERCP

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialised, minimally invasive procedure combining endoscopy and fluoroscopy (X-rays). The procedure is used to diagnose and treat blockages, stones, tumours, or scar tissue in the liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally invasive procedure that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to produce detailed images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs. An endoscopic ultrasound is commonly used to identify tumours, investigate the cause of abdominal pain and obtain tissue samples through biopsy.
