Our cardiothoracic services

We help people living with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • blocked arteries (coronary artery disease)
  • congenital heart defects
  • heart valve diseases
  • aortic aneurysms
  • lung cancer
  • trauma and chest injuries.

Our cardiothoracic surgeons are experts in a range of procedures, including:

  • minimally invasive and robotic mitral, aortic and tricuspid valve surgery
  • transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)
  • minimally invasive atrial septal defect closure
  • coronary artery bypass surgery, including off pump bypass surgery, and robotic-assisted minimally invasive bypass surgery
  • surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation
  • surgical treatment of aortic diseases such as aneurysms
  • minimally invasive and robotic surgery for lung and other tumours in the chest.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure that helps to repair damaged aortic valves by making an incision into the groin and replacing the valve with an artificial one.

Being a minimally invasive procedure means that TAVI patients may have a faster recovery and return home within a couple of days.

Surgery for blocked arteries

Coronary artery bypass grafting helps improve blood flow to the heart when the arteries have become narrowed or blocked. During the procedure, your surgeon uses a healthy blood vessel taken from another part of the body to create a new pathway for blood to flow around the blockage.

Lung procedures

Cardiothoracic surgeons may also perform lung resections. This can involve thoracoscopic surgery or robotic surgery where a small camera and fine thin instrument is inserted into your chest through very small incisions to conduct the procedure, allowing for faster recovery.

Lung cancer surgery

Lung cancer surgery removes the area of the lung affected by cancer, while aiming to preserve as much healthy lung tissue as possible. Depending on where the cancer is and how much of the lung is involved, this may include a segmentectomy to remove a small section of lung, a lobectomy to remove one lobe, or a pneumonectomy to remove an entire lung.

Lung reduction surgery

This type of surgery is usually carried out to help people with severe emphysema. This is usually a minimally invasive surgery where a portion of the diseased lung is removed

    Post-operative care

After cardiothoracic surgery, you are likely to spend some time in intensive care where our caregivers will monitor you closely.

You may experience some pain after surgery, particularly around your chest and the incision site itself. For this reason, our caregivers will actively monitor and manage your pain levels around the clock.

    Recovery from cardiothoracic surgery

We offer a range of rehabilitation services, including cardiac rehabilitation, which can help you return to your normal activities as quickly and safely as possible.
