Colorectal conditions can significantly affect a person’s health, comfort and quality of life. At St John of God Health Care, our colorectal surgical services provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for a wide range of bowel, rectal and anal conditions — from common benign problems through to complex colorectal cancer care.
Our team works closely with gastroenterologists, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses and allied health professionals to provide coordinated, evidence-based care tailored to each patient.
Our colorectal services
Comprehensive colorectal care
We provide specialist care for colonic, rectal and anal conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Our colorectal surgeons work in close collaboration with gastroenterologists to support patients who may require medical, endoscopic or surgical management.
Patients also have access to specialist nursing and support services, including inflammatory bowel disease nurses, colorectal cancer nurse specialists, wound care nurses and stoma therapy nurses. These services are particularly important for patients with complex care needs, those undergoing major bowel surgery, and patients requiring stoma education and ongoing support.
Colorectal cancer care
Our colorectal cancer service provides comprehensive care from diagnosis through to treatment, recovery and (active monitoring) surveillance.
Patients are supported through multidisciplinary cancer care bringing together colorectal surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and specialist nurses.
This team-based approach ensures that each patient’s treatment plan is carefully considered and aligned with current best practice. Where appropriate, treatment may include minimally invasive surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or a combination of therapies.
Minimally invasive surgery
Our colorectal surgeons offer a range of minimally invasive surgical options, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery for complex colorectal procedures. These approaches may support smaller incisions, enhanced precision and improved recovery in selected patients.
We also provide transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), for carefully selected rectal lesions and early rectal conditions.
Bowel, rectal and pelvic floor conditions
We provide specialist assessment and treatment for a range of anorectal and pelvic floor conditions, including:
- haemorrhoids
- anal fistulas
- fissures
- rectal prolapse
- difficulty emptying your bowel
- faecal incontinence.
Our advanced proctology services include minimally invasive haemorrhoid treatments such as Doppler-guided haemorrhoidal artery ligation, as well as specialist treatment for complex anal fistulas, including laser-based therapies such as Fistula-tract Laser Closure (FiLaC) where appropriate. FiLaC is a minimally invasive surgical laser treatment for anal fistulas.
For patients with faecal incontinence, we provide assessment and treatment options including sacral neuromodulation, a specialised therapy that may help improve bowel control in selected patients.
Diagnostic and investigative procedures
Our colorectal services also include diagnostic and investigative procedures such as colonoscopy, which plays an important role in assessing bowel symptoms, detecting polyps, investigating bleeding and supporting colorectal cancer prevention and diagnosis.
