Kindness in bloom

When 19-year-old Curtin Medical School student Amisha Silva began planning her birthday, she decided she didn’t want presents. Instead, she wanted to give back.

Amisha was inspired to show appreciation for the health care workers and patients who make up our hospital community.

Having started her journey in medicine, Amisha said she’s realised how complex and challenging health care can be - not just in treating disease, but in caring for people as a whole.

Determined to turn that reflection into action, Amisha gathered around 60 friends for a heartfelt birthday project. Together, they created almost 200 mini-bouquets, each carrying a simple message of compassion: “No matter what you’re going through, please know that there are people who care.”

On a cold and rainy Sunday, Amisha and her friends delivered 65 of those bouquets to patients and caregivers at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

Their small act of kindness brought joy and gratitude to everyone they met.

“It was incredibly heartwarming to hand them out,” Amisha said.

“If we were able to make a difference to even one person, the whole event was more than worth it.”

St John of God Subiaco Hospital Acting Mission Integration Director Karlee Guest said Amisha’s generosity is a reminder that compassion has no boundaries.

“In a world that can sometimes feel rushed or disconnected, gestures like this show that even the simplest act of kindness has the power to brighten someone’s day,” she said.

“We’re very grateful to Amisha and everyone else involved in this very special initiative. Their thoughtfulness touched many hearts”.
