What is especially surprising is that boys and girls arrived in perfect balance — 183 of each. It is the kind of coincidence that does not come along very often.
The story captured public interest beyond our hospital, making headlines in the online edition of The West Australian, highlighting this rare and heartwarming event.
St John of God Subiaco Hospital Maternity Nurse Unit Manager Suzie Kelly said it is very uncommon for us to see an exact split like this.
“I can’t remember the last time this happened. Usually, boys slightly outnumber girls, so this is something to smile about,” she said.
“It’s a wonderful reminder of the unpredictability and joy of childbirth, and it really brought a positive buzz to our maternity ward.”
New mum Alexandra DeSouza, who recently gave birth at the hospital, said she chose to keep the gender a surprise for all three of her children.
“I have two boys already, so finding out we’d had a girl was such a beautiful moment,” Alexandra said.
St John of God Subiaco Hospital is known for its comprehensive maternity services, providing support and care for families from pregnancy through to birth and beyond. The hospital’s team is dedicated to welcoming every new life with kindness, skill, and compassion.
