1. Can you tell me a little about your background and what inspired you to become an obstetrician and gynaecologist?
I am a Perth local and I had always been interested in gynaecology as a career option during my medical studies. In the end obstetrics won my heart!
2. What do you enjoy most about working with expectant mothers and women’s health?
Obstetrics typically has very positive outcomes as well as being very rewarding. I feel as though I get to make a difference each day.
3. What are some of the most common questions or concerns you hear from patients, and how do you address them?
There is a lot of uncertainty and anxiety from expectant mothers. My mission is to handhold as necessary as well as help navigate each woman’s journey through pregnancy and childbirth.
4. How do you stay updated with the latest developments and advancements in your field?
I regularly attend obstetrics and gynaecology conferences, seminars and audit meetings. Additionally, I mentor young medical students through my placement at Osborne Park Hospital to ensure excellent care for the next generation.
5. Can you share a memorable or particularly rewarding experience from your career?
Recently, my practice manager and I were blessed with a Christian prayer! The parents were just delighted to have their twins enter the world safely. It is great having my day-to-day work filled with moments like these!
6. What are some tips or advice you would offer to women who are preparing for pregnancy or managing their reproductive health?
First and foremost, maximising mental and physical health is paramount. A good family GP or even an obstetrician for more complex situations should be considered. Knowledge of prenatal vitamin supplementation, the new free genetic carrier screening and good dietary decisions are all important.
7. How do you ensure that your patients feel comfortable and supported during their visits?
I am very happy with the care and consideration women receive when they interact with us. I have great, tech savvy practice staff that are here five days a week. They promptly answer phone calls and emails with a mission to get back to patients within the same day. They also provide flexible appointments as we understand everyone is busy. I pride myself on offering non-rushed, face to face appointments as well as making myself available for telehealth appointments.
8. What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working? Any hobbies or interests you’re passionate about?
I have three wonderful daughters who are mostly grown up now and doing their own thing. I have always enjoyed the outdoors and remain a keen kayaker.
9. How would you describe your approach to patient care and your philosophy when it comes to treating patients?
I always try to treat my patients as if they were as important as family members.
10. Is there anything specific about working at our hospital that you find particularly fulfilling or unique?
I have always felt very privileged to work at St John of God Hospital Subiaco. This is mainly due to our outstanding midwives on the labour ward.
