Michael said it is a big honour to be recognised, not for having done any one earth-shattering thing, but for lots of small contributions that have accumulated over many years.

“It’s especially humbling to receive an honour that has previously been extended to so many people I admire and regard as outstanding in their respective fields,” he said.

“I am most proud of the assistance I have been able to give to my colleagues, both Australian and international graduates, and often at the outset of their careers, in progressing through the system. They’ve all been capable people, but it has been a pleasure to offer them direction or advice in pursuit of their aspirations.”

Since 2016, Mr Levitt has contributed to St John of God Health Care’s ongoing stewardship and strategic development as a member of the St John of God Health Care Board.

He was also formerly Chair of St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) from 2000 to 2004 and a member of the MAC from 1999 to 2013. In addition, Mr Levitt formerly held the positions of St John of God Subiaco Hospital Director of Medical Services and Director of Clinical Training in Surgery (2005 – 2013).

Amongst his many current industry positions, Michael is a Consultant Medical Director at the Western Australian Country Health Service and a Clinician Member of the Medical Board of Western Australia. He continues in clinical practice as a colorectal surgeon at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

His passionate advocacy for the health and wellbeing of the community is also reflected in the three books he has authored about bowel health for the general public.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital CEO Tina Chinery added that she was very grateful to Michael for his many years of service and was delighted to learn he had been recognised as part of the Australia Day Honours List.

“We are so pleased that he has been formally honoured for the outstanding care he has delivered to our patients and to members of the wider Western Australian community through his values-based leadership,” she said.

“Over the years, he has mentored many of our hospital’s specialists and caregivers and has left an indelible legacy on St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s clinical governance and the high quality care and services we deliver to our patients.

“This prestigious recognition is incredibly well deserved and is a reflection of the high esteem in which he is held by members of industry and the broader community at large.”
