New mum Michelle Britto did not realise she would be part of this special milestone when she gave birth to her twin boys Leo and Christopher on Sunday 16 March.

Born at 36 weeks, the boys are being cared for in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where they continue to grow stronger.

Michelle, who also has a nine-year-old son, Max, said she was both surprised and delighted when she found out she was expecting twins.

“After getting over the initial shock, I now can’t imagine it any other way. Hopefully it will be double the fun.”

Michelle added she was not aware it was Multiple Birth Awareness Week when the twins arrived, but the timing was extraordinary.

“It’s incredible to think another seven sets of twins were also born here this week, some of whom I’ve met in the NICU,” she said.

"The NICU experience has been amazing. Before giving birth, I was worried about the possibility of the boys needing NICU care. However, knowing they’re in safe hands has given me peace of mind and really helped me with rest and recovery.

“Every single person here has been so supportive, helpful and lovely.”

Leo and Christopher may remain in the NICU for another week as they continue to receive care and support for feeding.

As the only private hospital in Western Australia with a NICU, St John of God Subiaco Hospital provides leading care to babies born from 30 weeks, including those requiring ventilation.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital CEO Tina Chinery said the hospital is proud to offer a high level of care to families expecting multiples.

“Multiple births can sometimes come with additional complexities, and our team is committed to providing excellent, safe clinical care and reassurance to parents. Our NICU allows us to ensure babies who are born prematurely or unwell have the best possible start to life.

“The arrival of twins is so special and something we love to celebrate. In 2024 alone, 64 sets of twins were born here at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.”

Multiple Birth Awareness Week, held 16 to 23 March, aims to raise awareness of the unique realities for families expecting twins, triplets or more.
