Subiaco caregivers donate handcrafted poppies

Intensive Care Unit caregivers from St John of God Subiaco Hospital have been busy knitting and crocheting poppies in their spare time to donate to a World War 1 memorial in England.

The caregivers have so far made more than 400 poppies which will be added to the Project Heckington 100 display at St Andrew’s Church in Lincolnshire, England. The display will feature 10,000 poppies lining the steps of the church to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1.

A small notice placed in the hospital’s ICU tearoom by nurse Lesley Kemp prompted a number of caregivers to put their hand up to start creating the poppies.

"So far we have made almost 400 poppies, which will be added to their count of over 6,000 already received,” Lesley said.

“We are proud to be part of such an essential tribute and would love it if more people wanted to get involved.”

Project Heckington 100 was designed to pay tribute to the men and women of Heckington and other local villages who died in service. The exhibition of poppies will run from 27 October to 11 November.
