Enrolled Nurse Jeanette Tai won the “Excellence in Enrolled Nursing” category for her work in establishing and leading the hospital’s Clinical Equipment Library service.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Ann Annetts was one of the winners of the “Consumer Appreciation” category for her work with the hospital’s Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Network (DAWN), after being nominated by the mother of one of her clients.

Well done to Anne Annette, and Jeannette Tai who were all recognised at the Western Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, pictured with Laura Colvin, Director of Nursing at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.

In addition, Clinical Nurse Specialist Justin Dorigo was a finalist in the “Excellence in Primary, Public and Community Care” category for his work with DAWN.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital Director of Nursing and Midwifery Laura Colvin said it was fantastic to see the efforts of Jeannette Tai and Ann Annetts being recognised.

“Both Jeanette and Ann work extremely hard to ensure our patients and clients receive the highest quality care and are a great reflection of the distinctive and exceptional care provided at the hospital,” she said.

Ann’s nominator said Ann’s holistic approach, empathy and understanding gave confidence and a belief that a positive outcome could be achieved.

“The DAWN program was ideal for my daughter. Being home-based meant no pressure is place on the client to get themselves to appointments in a foreign setting. I believe the familiarity and security of being in their own home allows the client to be more relaxed and open,” she said.

“Over the time that Ann came into my daughter’s home, on a daily basis, she didn’t just do the job that was required: she encompassed all that was happening in our lives. She assisted my daughter deal with other complexities of her situation.”

Jeanette established the Clinical Equipment Library at the hospital a few years ago to enable clinical equipment to be centralised. Since then Jeannette has established a number of delivery, retrieval and redistribution equipment systems to ensure the smooth running of the library so staff can effectively and easily access equipment.

Her high standards and strong leadership skills have made significant contributions to the use, storage and maintenance of clinical equipment.

Each year Jeannette coordinates a Manual Tasks and Equipment Expo at the hospital, which over the past few years has grown from a one day to three day event to ensure maximise exposure.

This year Jeanette organised for a bariatric suit to be made available to staff so they can experience the limitations experienced by bariatric patients during their hospital stay. She also organised a preview event for the executive and nurse managers to view newly purchased equipment, so they are aware of the items.
