St John of God Bendigo Hospital celebrates 50th robotic surgery milestone
6 Aug 2025
This milestone underscores the hospital’s commitment to pioneering advanced, minimally invasive care for cancer and complex surgical patients in regional Victoria, reducing the need for travel to metropolitan centres.
Chief Executive Officer Michael Hogan emphasises the impact:
“Reaching our 50th robotic case is a game-changer for our region. This technology enables precision surgery with smaller incisions, fewer complications, and faster recovery times - ensuring our community receives world-class care closer to home.”
Since installation and the first case in March, the da Vinci Xi has been instrumental across a range of important procedures - including prostate, thoracic and gynaecological surgeries, benefiting both private and public patients.
The 50th robotic case was performed by gynaecological surgeon Dr Thomas Carins, who said he is “thrilled to be part of the robotics program at St John of God Bendigo Hospital and proud to offer patients the benefits of this cutting-edge technology in our regional setting.”
Michael Hogan said, “Robotic surgery significantly aids our commitment to outstanding clinical outcomes and helps reduce the healthcare disadvantage faced by regional patients.”
The da Vinci Xi arrived thanks to a $2.85 million fundraising initiative led by Director of Marketing and Business Development Anna Hill, supported by major donors including Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine, the Hazeldene family, community organisations, companies and key individuals.
The hospital is now expanding access to training through a new da Vinci training console via a shared platform with Bendigo Health - to build surgical expertise locally.
With continued community engagement, the St John of God Bendigo Hospital team look forward to advancing robotic surgery volumes and reshaping healthcare outcomes across Central and Northern Victoria.
