Enhancing Healing Environments: St John of God Ballarat Hospital’s Outdoor Upgrades

Recognising the vital role that a serene and inviting outdoor environment plays in healing and comfort, we are upgrading some of our hospital's outdoor spaces. These improvements aim to create more accessible, safe, and aesthetically pleasing areas for everyone who steps into our grounds.

Stage 1: Revitalising Our Ground Floor Cafe Surroundings

The initial phase of our outdoor enhancements has focused on the area surrounding our Ground Floor Cafe, a popular spot where patients, visitors, and caregivers can enjoy a moment of respite. Stage 1 works are almost completed.

Stage 1 includes:

  • Screen Replacement: We have replaced the screen in front of the ORU pool windows, ensuring unobstructed views and a brighter, more welcoming space.
  • Concrete Repainting: The concrete areas have been repainted, refreshing the look and feel of our outdoor seating and walkways.
  • New Walkway and Garden Bed: A new concrete walkway has been added for easier access, along with a new garden bed to introduce more greenery and colour to the area.
  • Garden Beds Makeover: Existing garden beds have been repainted and revitalized, enhancing the natural beauty of our outdoor cafe area.
  • New Chairs: The chairs in the outdoor space of the Ground Floor Café will be replaced.

Stage 2: Expanding Green Spaces and Accessibility

Looking ahead, Stage 2 of our outdoor upgrades will focus on the area outside of Glavin House. Our plans include:

  • More Lawn Area: We are expanding the lawn space, providing more green, open areas for relaxation and leisure.
  • Improved Accessibility: Alterations to the garden edging will make outdoor spaces more accessible to everyone, including those with mobility challenges.
  • Enhanced Safety: The replanting of current trees is part of our commitment to safety, ensuring that our green spaces are not only beautiful but also secure for all visitors and staff.

These enhancements are designed with the well-being of our community in mind, creating a more inviting and therapeutic environment outside the hospital walls.
