The hospital's newly expanded Special Care Nursery allowed the Ballarat family stay close to home to deliver their triplets.

“We would not have been able to consider triplets at St John of God Ballarat Hospital without the new space," Maternity Clinical Team Leader Erica Ferguson said.

"Fortunately for Nadia and Craig the babies were well grown, and an excellent gestation of 34.5 weeks, and our newly expanded space meant we could safely deliver the babies here in Ballarat saving the family unnecessary separation.

"Having this facility close to home was significant for the family because without it not only would Nadia have had to travel to Melbourne to deliver her babies, but she would have been completely isolated from her family."

Craig said it would have been tough to constantly travel down to Melbourne for only short visits with Nadia and the new bubs.

“It just made the whole process so much easier," he said.

Four-year-old Emma was so excited to become a big sister and said she was most excited about getting to cuddle the three little babies.

The new Special Care Nursery opened on December 12, and can hold up to seven mums and babies at one time.
