Mental health therapies and treatments at Richmond
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
Electroconvulsive therapy is a safe and effective treatment used for several mental health conditions including depression, bipolar disorder and some psychotic disorders, particularly when medications haven’t helped enough or cause difficult side effects.
During ECT, a carefully controlled electrical current briefly stimulates the brain, creating a short seizure that can improve mood and reduce symptoms.
Many people notice relief quite quickly following ECT. Treatments are usually given about three times a week, with the total course depending on how you respond. Read more about ECT.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, non-invasive treatment for people with mild to moderate depression, particularly when other treatments haven’t worked well. It uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that help regulate mood, which can become underactive during depression.
TMS is usually provided alongside other supports such as medication, and group or individual therapy to help improve overall wellbeing. A typical course involves about 20–25 sessions.
During TMS treatment, one of our trained caregivers monitors you, and you can relax by listening to music, watching a movie, or talking with loved ones. A referral from your GP is required.
Esketamine
Esketamine is an intranasal treatment which may be prescribed by our psychiatrists for treatment resistant depression. It is self-administered under clinical supervision using a fixed dose nasal spray device. Esketamine treatment is usually started during inpatient admission and continued via the outpatient clinic when you are discharged.
During esketamine treatment, one of our trained caregivers monitors you throughout the process.
