Emergency assistance

Anger is a normal human emotion, but it can become a problem when it starts affecting your relationships, work or health.

We have a number of evidence-based programs that help you to understand your triggers, recognise early warning signs and develop healthier ways to respond.

What is anger?

Anger is a healthy, normal human emotion. It is often triggered by a sense of injustice to yourself or others. It can range from feeling mildly annoyed to intense rage. Remember that everyone feels angry sometimes.

Anger can be healthy when expressed assertively. Sometimes anger can motivate you to change an unhealthy situation, help to identify times when we may need to protect ourselves, respond to a violation of boundaries or unfair or manipulative behaviour.

It's what we do when we're angry that can cause problems. For example, when anger is expressed as aggressive behaviour, makes you say or do things you regret, distracts you from important tasks, impacts your decision making and damages your reputation. Anger expressed as violence can cause physical injury and even result in death.

We work closely with you to identify what triggers your anger, and how you can learn to manage your emotions in a positive way.

When is anger a problem?

Anger can become a problem if it starts to affect your relationships and everyday life. Signs anger may be becoming a problem for you include:

  • Feeling like you can’t control your anger.
  • Reacting to situations with more anger than you’d expect.
  • Expressing your anger through abusive or destructive behaviour.
  • Upsetting or hurting other people because of angry outbursts.
  • Using alcohol or drugs to cope with your anger.

Our anger management programs

We have a number of evidence-based programs that may be able to help you manage problematic anger. We deliver all of our programs in a friendly, pleasant, and welcoming environment. We encourage collaboration and work with you to tailor treatment to your individual needs.

Programs may be provided in group and individual sessions and can assist you to:

  • understand anger in various contexts
  • respond to situations effectively
  • communicate your needs while respecting others.

Our programs are delivered by experienced clinicians who work closely with a broader, multidisciplinary treatment team to provide holistic care.

Your general practitioner or psychiatrist will refer you to the program that best suits your needs.

Our anger and post-traumatic stress disorder program will help you to identify your own personal cycle of anger-related behaviours by:

  • Developing an understanding of the function of anger and the anger cycle.
  • Helping you to incorporate skills targeted to each part of the anger cycle in order to decrease anger outbursts.
  • Supporting you to develop more constructive ways to use anger to solve problems, improve relationships, and improve your quality of life.

These benefits depend on your particular circumstances and require your full participation. Please consult a specialist in this area before deciding whether treatment is suitable for you.
