Midwifery-led care motivates Michelle

Registered Midwife and Nurse Michelle says working at Hawkesbury District Health Service allows her to experience the full range of midwifery care to women and families.

Michelle credits this with keeping her at the hospital for the past 12 years.

“The best thing about Hawkesbury District Health Service is our collaborative, midwifery-led approach to the care of our women and babies and families,” she said.

“We have a smaller unit which allows us to spend more time with women and our families, and care for them in a holistic way.

“We have both a midwifery clinic and a doctor led clinic to support our higher risk women.”

Michelle said this approach enabled midwives at the hospital to experience the full scope of their practice.

“You can experience the entire scope of practice from antenatal care to postnatal care, intrapartum care and working in the special care nursery,” she said.

“There is no typical day at Hawkesbury. You can come in and work in birth unit care for women having inductions of labours and C-sections and of course you have your walk-ins who come in in spontaneous labour.

“The ward can be full of your postnatal and antenatal women, and we also have the special care nursery where you support premature babies growing up, or your sick babies or babies having phototherapy.

“It’s a really good place to use all of your skills in midwifery and you are fully supported and get to work with a team who really look after each other.”
